Great St Mary’s provides a large, attractive and unique concert venue in the centre of one of the most historic and beautiful of England’s cities. A standard concert booking will generally include the following, in addition to use of the main church for the concert performance:
- one afternoon rehearsal
- use of the narthex and/or south lobby
- trestle tables and cloths
- standard lighting
- orchestra seating
- one Yamaha upright piano (tuning cost not included)
Additionally available for hire are:
- music stands and clip lights
- kitchen facilities
- secure green room/dressing room
- PA system
- Use of parish organ (conditions apply)
Great St Mary’s does not provide any front-of house-staff. Each promoter is responsible for providing sufficient stewards and staff to set up and run your event. You must provide competent stewards over the age of 18 to supervise the entrance and exit of the public through each of the doors in public use. Their major responsibilities include checking tickets, assisting patrons in finding their seats and taking control of their designated area in the event of any evacuation or other emergency. You will also be responsible for providing staff to sell programmes or other merchandise.
Great St Mary’s can seat up to 1200 people. We strongly recommend the use of reserved seating, as it facilitates audience seating and improves the chance of disabled patrons securing a seat that is appropriate to their needs. This will also save your stewards having to prevent latecomers from standing in the aisles when the audience is full.
If you are looking for a more intimate concert space, Michaelhouse may be the perfect spot for you. Located just 100 yards north of Great St Mary’s, the chancel at Michaelhouse seats approximately 70 people.
We do not operate our own box office at Great St Mary’s. You may make arrangements with the ADC Theatre, to sell tickets on your behalf. We can provide a table at the West Door as a box office point in the narthex for sales on the night of the concert, but you will be responsible for making your own float and cash security.

Public Liability Insurance
Great St Mary’s has public liability insurance to cover injury, loss or damage resulting from its own negligence. You are also required to hold public liability insurance to cover injury, loss or damage resulting from your and/or your agent’s own negligence with a limit of indemnity of £2m. In order to comply with the requirements of the Performing Rights Society, you must complete the form supplied and return it with a programme, within 7 days of your event. Failure to do so will result in an extra fee being incurred. Great St Mary’s is required by the Performing Rights Society to give programme and ticket details for each concert held in the Church to allow the society to determine whether a charge should be made for the performance. The standard PRS charge is £30.00 per concert, however if your attendance figures exceed 1000, the higher rate of £50 will be charged. You will be invoiced for any extra sum after the event once returns are received.
