Who’s Who?

Meet the leadership team here at Great St Mary's

John Binns

John has responsibility for the mission of the parish, and is especially concerned with staff support and care of the congregation at Great St Mary’s.  He is an Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral.  John served as a Parish Priest and Hospital Chaplain in London before becoming vicar here in 1994.  He is chair of trustees of Partners for Change Ethiopia, with fresh approaches to international development.  John has written studies of eastern Christianity with a  history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to be published later this year.

Devin Mclachlan

Associate Vicar
Devin is a native of Chicago now living in Cambridge.  He has previously served as a parish priest in Massachusetts, and  as a chaplain at the University of Chicago. He is the past president of Grassroots International and of the Hyde Park Transitional  Housing Project.  He combines his ministry at Great St Mary’s with chaplaincy at Jesus College.

Sam Hayes

Director of Music
Sam is responsible a wide range of music, with over a hundred musicians in several choirs singing three choral services most Sundays and a variety of other concerts, tours and events.  The Girls’ Choir is one of the oldest church or cathedral girls’ choirs in the country, founded in 1989. There are choral services each week and regular concerts. Sam read Music at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar and, latterly, was Director of Music in Chapel. He also taught music for the University of Cambridge for ten years. Sam is Musician-in-Residence at King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds, where he also teaches A-level music.

Robert Smyth

Robert knows Great St Mary’s and Cambridge well.  He came to us from Gonville and Caius College where he was a porter.  This has given him extensive experience of maintaining buildings, security procedures, health & safety, and a wide range of other knowledge.  You’ll find, however, as you get to know him, that people come first and he will always have time to meet you and deal with your concerns and queries.

Paul Hammans

Business Systems Support Manager
Paul brings extensive experience of IT, employment practice and training within the police force and voluntary agencies.  He provides oversight of the policies, contracts, repair and building work and good practice in employment – all ensuring the smooth and effective running of church life.

Emma Dunn

Parish Secretary and Music Administrator
Emma splits her time between working in the office as Parish Secretary and being our Music Administrator – supporting Sam, the choirs and the musical life of the church, including choir administration, choir tours, concerts, recitals and the music library. Emma has extensive experience in administration and sings in the GSM choir.

Anna Lovewell

Heritage Education Officer
Rosie runs our Heritage Education programme, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project aims to bring Great St. Mary’s histories alive for a wide audience and to open up the church as a dynamic centre where visitors, school groups and Cambridge residents can discover new facets of our historic city. Margaret Johnston and Joye Rosenstiel

Churchwardens are the Bishop’s officers in the parish. Elected by the parish, they provide leadership and guidance in all aspects of our life together.   Margaret was formerly an Administrator in the Earth Sciences Department and was awarded the MBE for her services to education.  Joye was a Liberal Democrat Council Member and former Mayor of Cambridge.
